Through the study and practice of Between-Lives Spiritual Regression or Life Between Lives, we have learned that we, as souls, choose how much soul energy we will bring with us into a life incarnate. Just as we choose the lessons of our life, our body, our families, our friends, our circumstances and environments, our intelligence, and on and on and on, we also decide how much of our eternal soul energy we will carry with us for the journey ahead.
Let me pause for a moment before continuing because people with analytical minds (like mine) will need this precursor to what I’m going to talk about next. In consideration of the eternal soul and energy and One and Everything, please know that all quantifying terms, whether of time or weight or number, are all for the comprehension and delight of our human minds. Just as energy cannot be created or destroyed, energy cannot be weighed or counted or quantified. So moving forward, bear with me. I’m a human communicating to humans, so I’m going to use human references: numbers!
Let’s consider the Golden Spiral. This beautiful naturally omnipresent spiral has no beginning and no end. It is eternal and infinite. But because we are human and we have a fundamental need for a start line and an “in the beginning,” to interpret this spiral into mathematical terms graspable by the human brain, we start with a number. A real number. From that real number, we have a foundation. We can go anywhere from there. Because we need a starting point, we begin with 0 or 1. That is where we get the elegant Fibonacci Sequence.

Does a galactic spiral or a weather event or a snail shell or an unfurling fiddlehead start with 0 or 1? No, but when we interpret these phenomena with our human minds, we apply the zero or the one so that we can understand them. The same goes for this conversation.
So before we embark on our journey back into incarnate life, before we leave Spirit Realm or Home to join the baby in utero before birth, we choose how much of our soul we would like to take with us for the challenges ahead and how much we would like to leave behind to continue our ongoing work in Spirit Realm and elsewhere.
From Latin, in philosophy, soul is “anima.” How much anima do we need to animate ourselves for the life ahead?
The heavier or denser worlds are, the more soul/energy we need. I have witnessed with my clients worlds where we were almost stone-like, so heavy, cumbersome, and slow, where much more soul energy was needed. In life as more energetic beings, without skin and bones or gravity, we need very little soul energy to animate, because energy is simply our nature. Earth is a heavy place. It is a very challenging learning ground. We do need to bring enough soul energy with us to do our jobs here. The average amount that souls take with them for earth life is somewhere around 50%.
When souls choose to carry less soul energy than this, particularly when these souls experience very challenging lives, they may feel extraordinarily run down. Recently a client told me in a session, “I can see my soul. It’s… deflated. It’s flat.” She wondered what was wrong with her (something that we humans tend to do when we butt up against challenge is assume that we messed up or that we are the problem). Having seen this before, I asked her to ask her Spirit Guide how much soul she had chosen to bring with her. “Oh! Not very much,” she said. (She later told me she only had about 15%.) She asked if it was in her highest good to infuse more soul into her system and her Guide was so excited: “Yes!” She connected with more at this time.
What reason might we have to take less soul with us? The reasons are personal and varied, but I will say that I have seen it most often in more experienced souls. I believe this is because less experienced souls rely more on the recommendations of their Spirit Guides. So perhaps there is a feeling of having done this so many times before and of counting on previous experience to get them through. Perhaps a commitment to their beautiful work in Spirit Realm is their reason, wanting so much to continue their energetic explorations in earnest while also learning and growing on Earth. (We, as energy, are astounding multitaskers. Just for fun, imagine what an existence might be like without the confines of a body.) Perhaps some see it as more of a challenge. For example, maybe they want to experience powerlessness in the profoundest of ways in order to learn, and going in weak is their conscious decision to facilitate the lesson plan. Whatever the reasons, it happens. It’s so very helpful, then, that we can always simply get more when we need it.
How much soul? On Earth, in this heavy learning ground of solids and gravity, where our thick emotions and our almost tangible intelligence guide our flesh-and-bone bodies, the answer is: quite a lot, actually.
